Jordi put out a new post on compounding ClickHouse optimizations. I really like it because you can see that with the right tool (in this case, ClickHouse) performance gains sometimes are not the result of some abstract stroke of genius but of a concrete way of working: testing, understanding what’s going on one layer below, and caring. Which is not to say that it’s easy — that blog post has a lot of database experience to it, and there’s no way anyone but someone who has been around the block can keep that partition key.
I started running again after a very dumb knee injury that basically meant I was out all summer. I now run with one album back-to-back. Enjoying it like a little kid.
This summer I read Patti Smith’s Just Kids. I liked it not because of the biographical aspect of “how to rise to fame” but because of the description of young love that turns into a deep connection with someone who just gets you, who saw you for who you really were before anyone else, and who was part of your growth into an adult. In the end there are no more romantic feelings, but that someone will always be a landmark in your life.
